Born in 1964 in the Philippines. Lives and works in Ile Saint Denis.
An international artist, Gaston Damag draws inspiration from the ehnographic traditions of his native Cordilleran region in the northern Philippines, which he combines with materials and modes of display identified as modern and/or contemporary. In particular, he uses the Bul-ul idol - the god of rice - whose »primitive» dimension Gaston often accentuates in paintings, structures and installations made of steel, neon and mirror, less to provoke a clash of traditions than to incite a rethinking of relationships, assimilation and multiple meanings in a pertinent response to both post-colonialism and the global profusion of histories in which we live today.
Gaston Damag has exhibited in France, the United States and the Philippines.
